How to Calculate Your Semester Grade

Your semester grade combines your performance across the full term into one final score. Follow these steps to calculate it manually — or just use the calculator above.

1
Find your quarter grades — Check your report card, student portal (PowerSchool, Canvas, Infinite Campus), or ask your teacher. You need each marking period grade as a percentage.
2
Check the weight formula — Most US high schools use 40% / 40% / 20% (two quarters + final exam). Some use 33/33/33, 45/45/10, or custom weights. Check your student handbook or syllabus.
3
Multiply each grade by its weight — Convert the percentage to a decimal (40% = 0.40) and multiply. Example: 85 × 0.40 = 34
4
Add the weighted scores together — The total is your semester average. Example: 34 + 36 + 17.6 = 87.6%

The 40-40-20 Formula Explained

The most common semester grading formula in US public high schools is 40-40-20: each quarter counts for 40% and the final exam counts for 20%.

Semester Grade = (Q1 × 0.40) + (Q2 × 0.40) + (Final Exam × 0.20)

📊 Worked Example — 40/40/20 System

ComponentYour GradeWeightContribution
Quarter 185%40%85 × 0.40 = 34.0
Quarter 290%40%90 × 0.40 = 36.0
Final Exam88%20%88 × 0.20 = 17.6
Semester Grade34 + 36 + 17.6 = 87.6%

Other Common Weighting Systems

Not every school uses 40/40/20. Here are the most common alternatives:

40/40/20
Most Common
2 quarters at 40% each, final at 20%. Standard in most US public high schools.
33/33/33
Equal Thirds
Each quarter and the final carry equal weight. Used in some private schools and colleges.
45/45/10
Low Exam Weight
Quarters carry more weight. Final exam only counts 10%. Easier on test-anxious students.
50/50
No Final Exam
Straight average of two quarter grades. Common for classes without a semester exam.
Tip: Always check your teacher's syllabus or student handbook to confirm the exact weighting. It can vary by class, teacher, or district — even within the same school.

Semester Grade Calculator for High School

High school semester grades are recorded permanently on your transcript and directly affect your GPA. Here's what you need to know:

How High School Semester Grades Work

Most US high schools divide each semester into two 9-week marking periods (quarters). At the end of the semester, your two quarter grades are combined with your final exam to produce your semester grade. This final semester grade — not your quarter grades — appears on your official transcript.

With Final Exam

If your school has a final exam or semester test, use the Standard (40/40/20) tab in the calculator above. Enter your two quarter grades and your final exam score.

Without Final Exam

Some high schools do not require a semester final for certain courses. In that case, your semester grade is simply:

Semester Grade = (Quarter 1 + Quarter 2) ÷ 2

Use the No Final Exam tab in the calculator above for this formula.

Middle School

Middle school semester grades work identically to high school. Enter your marking period grades and — if applicable — your final exam score. The same 40/40/20 formula typically applies from grades 6–12.

Semester Grade Calculator — 3 Six-Weeks System

Some districts (especially in Texas) divide each semester into three six-week grading periods instead of two quarters.

Semester Grade = (6W1 × 0.333) + (6W2 × 0.333) + (6W3 × 0.333)

Or, if a final exam is included (typically worth 20%), each six-weeks counts for ~26.7%:

Semester Grade = (6W1 × 0.267) + (6W2 × 0.267) + (6W3 × 0.267) + (Final × 0.20)

Use the Custom Weights tab and enter your six-weeks grades with the appropriate weights.

Midterm & Semester Exam Calculator

A midterm exam falls halfway through the semester. Depending on your school, it may:

  • Count as part of your first quarter grade (folded in with other tests)
  • Count as a separate weighted component (e.g., 10–20% of the semester)
  • Simply be one major test in your gradebook with no special weight
Quick Example: Quarter 1 (35%) + Midterm (15%) + Quarter 2 (35%) + Final Exam (15%) = 100%. Enter these four values in the Custom Weights tab.

What Is a Semester Grade?

A semester grade is the final grade you receive for a class at the end of one semester — typically 18 weeks. It combines your ongoing performance into a single score permanently recorded on your transcript.

Why Semester Grades Matter

📄
Transcript Record: Semester grades — not quarter grades — appear on your official transcript. Colleges review these during admissions.
📈
GPA Calculation: Your semester grades are converted to grade points and averaged to produce your cumulative GPA — one of the most important numbers in college applications.
🎓
Credit Earning: You must pass a class each semester to earn course credit toward graduation. Failing may require summer school or course repetition.

Semester Grade vs. Quarter Grade

Your quarter grade is a checkpoint — it shows how you're doing mid-semester but does not appear on your transcript. Your semester grade is the one that counts permanently.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my semester grade with the 40-40-20 system?▾
Multiply your 1st Quarter grade by 0.40, your 2nd Quarter grade by 0.40, and your Final Exam score by 0.20. Add all three results together. Example: Q1 = 85, Q2 = 90, Final = 88 → (85 × 0.40) + (90 × 0.40) + (88 × 0.20) = 34 + 36 + 17.6 = 87.6%.
What grade do I need on my final exam to pass the semester?▾
Use the "Score Needed" tab in the calculator above. Enter your current semester grade (before the final), the weight of your remaining work, and your target grade. The calculator tells you the exact score required.
How are semester grades calculated without a final exam?▾
If your class has no final exam, your semester grade is the simple average of your quarter grades: (Quarter 1 + Quarter 2) ÷ 2. Use the "No Final Exam" tab above. If you have three marking periods, divide by 3.
Does my quarter grade appear on my transcript?▾
No. Quarter grades are progress checkpoints and are usually not recorded on your official transcript. Only semester grades appear on the transcript sent to colleges and future employers.
How do semester grades affect my GPA?▾
Your semester grade percentage converts to a letter grade, which maps to a grade point (e.g., B = 3.0). That grade point is multiplied by your course credit hours. Your GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours. A higher semester grade directly raises your GPA. You can compute this directly in the "GPA by Course" tab above.
Can a good final exam save a bad semester grade?▾
Yes — but only to a degree. In a 40/40/20 system, if your two quarters average 70%, the maximum possible semester grade (with a perfect 100% on the final) is (70 × 0.80) + (100 × 0.20) = 76%. Use the Score Needed tab to see exactly how much the final can help in your situation.
How do I calculate my semester grade for college classes?▾
College classes don't use the quarter/40-40-20 system. The syllabus lists category weights (homework, quizzes, midterm, final, participation, etc.). Use the Custom Weights tab and enter each category's average grade and weight from your syllabus.
What is the Palm Beach County semester grade formula?▾
Palm Beach County Public Schools uses the 40/40/20 formula: Quarter 1 (40%) + Quarter 2 (40%) + Semester Exam (20%). Enter your grades in the Standard tab — it uses exactly this formula.
