Grading Scale for 27 Questions
On a 27-question test, each question is worth 3.7%, so every wrong answer lowers the score by 3.7 percentage points. That is typical of a chapter test. The chart below shows the percentage and letter grade for every possible score, from 27 right down to 0.
Letter grades on a 27-question test
This summary uses the standard plus/minus scale (A from 93%, A− from 90%, B+ from 87% and so on down to D− at 60%). For a plain scale, an A needs 25 right (miss up to 2), a B allows 5 misses, a C allows 8, and a D allows 10.
| Grade | Right | Wrong | Percentage |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 27 | 0 | 100% |
| A | 26 | 1 | 96.3% |
| A− | 25 | 2 | 92.6% |
| B+ | 24 | 3 | 88.9% |
| B | 23 | 4 | 85.2% |
| B− | 22 | 5 | 81.5% |
| C+ | 21 | 6 | 77.8% |
| C | 20 | 7 | 74.1% |
| C− | 19 | 8 | 70.4% |
| D+ | No possible score on a 27-question test | ||
| D | 18 | 9 | 66.7% |
| D− | 17 | 10 | 63% |
| F | 0–16 | 11–27 | 0–59.3% |
Because each question is worth 3.7%, one letter grade can’t be reached at all on a 27-question test: D+. Scores jump straight over that range. If that matters for your grade book, use half-point scoring in the EZ Grader (Settings → Half points).

The dashed line marks the pass mark (60%). “+/−” uses the standard plus/minus scale; “Plain” uses A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60.

Borderline scores to watch
On a 27-question test, 3 scores sit just below a grade cutoff and would move up a letter grade if you round to the nearest whole percent: 25/27 = 92.6%, which rounds up to an A; 18/27 = 66.7%, which rounds up to a D+; 17/27 = 63%, which rounds up to a D. Decide your rounding rule before grading so these students are treated the same way. The EZ Grader’s Show decimals option shows the exact value.
Compared with a 26-question test, where each miss costs 3.85 points, a miss here costs 3.7 points, so every answer matters a little less.
