What Is the EZ Grader & How Does It Work?
The EZ Grader Calculator is a free online grading tool that converts raw test scores into percentages and letter grades automatically. You provide two pieces of information — the total number of questions and how many were answered incorrectly — and the tool instantly returns a percentage score and the corresponding letter grade based on a standard A–F grading scale.
The original EZ Grader was a physical slide chart invented decades ago to help teachers quickly look up grades without doing mental math, and today's teacher grade calculator tools carry on that same tradition. Teachers would slide a card along a printed grid to find the score for any combination of questions and wrong answers. The digital version does everything the paper chart did — only faster, with no size limits, and with customizable grading scales that the original never offered.
Looking for a grading scale for a specific number of questions? Type the number into the calculator above and the full chart appears instantly, or open a ready-made printable chart for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 or 50 questions. Odd sizes like 23 and 37 questions have their own charts too, and every size from 5 to 100 is in the grade chart library. For anything longer, like 68 or 250 questions, the calculator builds the chart on the spot.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Grade Any Test in Seconds
Grading a full stack of tests used to mean reaching for a calculator or a paper grading chart. Here's how the online EZ Grader makes it faster:
Enter the total number of questions on the test (for example, 25).
The grading chart generates automatically as you type — showing the percentage and letter grade for every possible wrong-answer count.
Find your student's number of wrong answers in the chart to see their exact grade instantly.
Open Settings and switch on "Show decimals" if you need precise decimal grades rather than rounded scores.
Click "Print / Save PDF" to keep a copy of the full grading chart for your entire stack of papers.
The auto-generated grading chart is especially useful for teachers grading 30+ tests at once. Generate it once, print it or pin it to the side, and move through papers in seconds.
Class Mode: Grade the Whole Class at Once
Most grade calculators work one student at a time. Class Mode takes your entire class list in one paste and returns every student's percentage and letter grade, plus the numbers you need for reporting: class average, median, highest and lowest score, pass rate and the full A–F grade spread.
Open the Class Mode tab and enter the total questions.
Choose whether your scores are wrong answers, right answers or percentages.
Paste one student per line, like Ayesha, 2, or copy the name and score columns straight from Excel or Google Sheets. A bare list such as 3, 0, 5, 7 works too.
Pick a curve if you need one and watch every grade update live, then Download CSV for your grade book or Print a copy.
Preview a curve before you apply it
Class Mode offers three common curves: add a fixed number of points to everyone, scale the top score to 100%, or apply a square-root curve (10 × √score). The table shows each student's grade before and after, with an arrow on every grade that moves up, so you can see exactly who a curve helps before you commit to it.
Spot borderline students instantly
Any student within 1% of the next grade cutoff is tagged, for example 0.5% from B+. These are the rounding calls teachers usually have to hunt for by hand; Class Mode lists them for you so your rounding policy is applied consistently across the class.
Weighted Grade Calculator: Percent, Letter or Points in One Box
Most courses don't count every assignment equally. Homework might be 20% of the grade, quizzes 15%, the midterm 25% and the final 30%. The Weighted Grade tab multiplies each grade by its weight, adds them up and divides by the total weight, so you see your real course grade instead of a plain average.
Each grade box understands three formats, and you can mix them freely: a percentage like 92, a letter like B+, or raw points like 45/50. The box shows the percent it is using, so a letter is never a hidden guess: it counts as the middle of its range on your grade scale (for example B+ = 88.5% on the default scale). Change the scale in Settings and the conversion follows it.
How the weighted grade is calculated
Example: homework 92% (weight 20), quizzes B+ (weight 15), midterm 41/50 (weight 25) and a project at 78% (weight 10). That's (92×20 + 88.5×15 + 82×25 + 78×10) ÷ 70 = 85.7%, a B, with 30% of the course still to come.
What you need on the rest of the course
When your weights add up to less than 100%, the calculator treats the rest as work still to come and shows the average you need on it for an A, B, C or D, plus your own goal if you type one (a number like 90 or a letter like A−). In the example above, a B needs 66.8% on the remaining 30%, while an A is out of reach even with perfect scores. If your class uses points instead of percentages, switch to Points and enter the points still to come.
See which assignment is costing you the most
The result also names the assignment that pulls your grade down the most and by how many points, so students know where extra effort pays off and teachers can see which task hurt a class grade. Paste rows straight from Excel or Google Sheets (assignment, grade, weight) and every box fills in at once.
What Does A, B, C, D, and F Mean? The US Grading Scale Explained
Before using any grade calculator, it helps to know exactly what each letter grade stands for. The standard American grading scale — used by the vast majority of US elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and colleges — converts a percentage score into one of five letter grades:
| Letter Grade | Percentage | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| A | 90–100% | Excellent |
| B | 80–89% | Good |
| C | 70–79% | Satisfactory / Average |
| D | 60–69% | Passing, but below average |
| F | Below 60% | Failing |
What Percent Is an A, B, C, D, or F?
Using the table above: A = 90–100%, B = 80–89%, C = 70–79%, D = 60–69%, and F = anything below 60%. This is the most widely used cutoff scale in American schools, though it isn't universal — some schools start the A range at 93% and add plus/minus grades (A−, B+, and so on). If your school uses a different scale, open Settings in the EZ Grader above and switch Grade +/− on for the finer breakdown (or off for plain letters), or set your own cutoffs under Grade scale.
Is a 90 an A or a B?
Under the standard 5-tier scale, a 90% is an A — it sits right at the bottom edge of the A range. Under a plus/minus scale where A starts at 93%, a 90% would instead fall in the A− range. This is exactly the kind of boundary case where knowing your school's specific grading policy matters, since the same raw score can land in a different letter-grade bucket depending on the cutoffs used.
What Does an F Mean, and Is There Such a Thing as a D−?
An F stands for "Fail" and represents a score below the minimum passing threshold — typically 60%, though this varies by school and grade level. Some grading systems do include a D− or even F+ for finer distinctions near the failing line, but the five core letters (A, B, C, D, F) form the backbone of the US grading system that this calculator, and nearly every American school, is built around.
Real Classroom Examples: See EZ Grader in Action
The fastest way to understand what this tool does is to see it applied to real tests. Here are five common scenarios and the grades they produce:
| Test Size | Wrong Answers | % Score | Letter Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 questions | 1 wrong | 90% | A− |
| 20 questions | 3 wrong | 85% | B |
| 25 questions | 4 wrong | 84% | B |
| 50 questions | 7 wrong | 86% | B |
| 100 questions | 12 wrong | 88% | B+ |
Biology Quiz Example (20 Questions)
A teacher gives a 20-question biology quiz. One student gets 3 wrong — that's 17 correct out of 20, an 85%, which lands squarely at a B under a standard grading scale. With the EZ Grader quiz grade calculator, the teacher confirms this in under 5 seconds without touching a separate calculator. For a full class of 30 students, the grading chart shows every possible score at once, so each paper takes only a few seconds to process.
Math Test Example (50 Questions)
On a 50-question math test, each wrong answer costs exactly 2 percentage points. A student with 7 wrong answers scores 86% — a strong B. The grade calculator makes this relationship visible immediately. Teachers can also see that the difference between a B and a B+ is just one or two questions on a test this size, which is useful context when reviewing results with students.
Final Exam Example (100 Questions)
For a 100-question final exam, manually checking scores can take 30 to 45 minutes for a full class. With EZ Grader, you enter 100 into the questions field and instantly get a complete reference table for every score from 0 wrong to 100 wrong. The entire grading process for a class of 30 students drops to under 10 minutes — without a single manual calculation.

Set Your Own Grading Scale — No Restrictions
Most online graders lock you into one fixed grading scale. That works if your school follows the exact same cutoffs — but many don't. Some districts require a 94 or higher for an A. Others set 70% as the lowest passing grade instead of 60%. The EZ Grader's custom scale feature lets you define your own cutoffs for every grade level.
To use it, click the Settings button at the top of the calculator, scroll to Grade scale, and enter the minimum percentage for each letter grade. Once you hit "Save grade scale," every score the calculator produces will reflect your school's actual policy, not a default that may not apply to your classroom. Your scale is remembered on your device — set it once at the start of the year and it's ready every time you return.

The Complete A–F Grading Scale with GPA Equivalents
For reference, here is the standard grading scale used in most U.S. schools. This table reflects the default settings in the EZ Grader Calculator — and if you want a deeper breakdown of what each GPA actually means for college admissions and scholarships, see the complete GPA scale guide.
| Letter Grade | Percentage Range | GPA (4.0 Scale) |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97–100% | 4.0 |
| A | 93–96% | 4.0 |
| A− | 90–92% | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87–89% | 3.3 |
| B | 83–86% | 3.0 |
| B− | 80–82% | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77–79% | 2.3 |
| C | 73–76% | 2.0 |
| C− | 70–72% | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67–69% | 1.3 |
| D | 63–66% | 1.0 |
| D− | 60–62% | 0.7 |
| F | Below 60% | 0.0 |
GPAs don't always land exactly on a letter grade. A semester of mixed A's and B's often averages out to something like a 3.5 GPA, while mostly A's with one B typically produces a 3.8 GPA — the scale guide above covers every value from 2.0 to 4.0 and what each one means for admissions.
Note: GPA cutoffs and letter grade ranges vary by institution. Most US high schools cap an A+ at 4.0, while some colleges award 4.3 for an A+. Always confirm with your school's official grading policy, or use our GPA to letter grade converter to cross-check values.
Why Teachers Switch to the Online EZ Grader
Teachers who switch from manual grading or spreadsheets to an online grader consistently report the same thing: it's not just faster — it's less mentally draining. Calculating percentages by hand for 30 students is tedious work that's also surprisingly error-prone. A misplaced decimal can give a student the wrong grade. An automatic grade calculator eliminates that risk entirely.

High-speed grading through large paper stacks
Built for Teachers: Save Hours Every Week
Grading a class of 30 students by hand — looking up scores, calculating percentages, recording grades — can easily take 30 to 45 minutes per test. For assignments with different weights, the weighted grade calculator handles the math. With the EZ Grader Calculator, the same task takes under 10 minutes. You enter the total questions once, the grading chart appears instantly, and you move through each paper in seconds. Over a full school year, that adds up to dozens of hours returned to lesson planning, student feedback, and rest. This is a grade calculator for teachers designed around how grading actually happens in a real classroom — whether you teach elementary school spelling tests, middle school science quizzes, high school exams, or college midterms.
Improved Student Engagement Through Faster Feedback
Feedback is most useful while a test is still fresh in students' minds. When grading takes days, students have often moved on, and the corrections land with less impact. By reducing grading time from 45 minutes to under 10, the EZ Grader makes same-day or next-class feedback achievable for most teachers — even with large class sizes. Students who receive faster feedback are better positioned to correct misunderstandings before moving on to the next unit, which leads to stronger performance over time.
Pro Tips to Grade Faster Without Errors
Small workflow changes can make a significant difference when grading large stacks of papers. These tips are specific to the EZ Grader Calculator:
Generate the chart first, grade second. Enter your question count and the chart appears instantly — print or pin it before you touch a single paper. Each paper becomes a simple lookup — no re-entering values for every student.
Use keyboard shortcuts for bulk grading. Use arrow keys to move between fields and press R to reset. For teachers working through 30+ papers, keeping your hands on the keyboard saves roughly 5–10 seconds per paper — that's 3–5 minutes per class, per test.
Enable decimals when precision matters. Switch on "Show decimals" in Settings before grading tests where a half-point difference could change a letter grade. This gives you the full percentage so you can apply your own rounding policy.
Print or save your grading chart as a PDF. Use the "Print / Save PDF" button to keep a copy on your device. Reuse it across multiple class periods grading the same test, or attach it to your grade book notes for record-keeping.
Set your custom scale once, use it all year. Take two minutes at the start of the year to configure your school's grading cutoffs under Settings → Grade scale. Your scale is saved on your device — from that point forward, every test you grade will automatically reflect the correct policy.

A Note From the Team
Teaching is one of the hardest jobs there is. The administrative side of it — the grading, the record-keeping, the late nights with a stack of papers — shouldn't be the part that takes the most time.
We built this tool because we believe teachers deserve tools that actually speed up the tedious parts so they can spend more energy on the work that matters: the students in front of them.
If this calculator saves you even 20 minutes a week, that's about 12 hours back by the end of the school year. Use them well.
