What Is a Weighted Average Grade?

In most courses, not every assignment carries equal importance. A final exam might count for 40% of your grade while a quiz counts for only 10%. A weighted average accounts for these differences so your final grade truly reflects each component's contribution.

The Formula

// Weighted Average Formula
Weighted Average = Σ(Grade × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weights)

// Example: English 85×40% + Math 92×35% + Science 78×25%
= (85×40 + 92×35 + 78×25) ÷ 100
= (3400 + 3220 + 1950) ÷ 100
= 85.70% → Letter Grade: B

Weighted vs. Unweighted Average

Weighted average — each grade is multiplied by its importance before averaging.

Unweighted average — every grade is treated equally. Simply add all grades and divide by the count. If your class uses a grade curve, this tool handles that too.

Points mode: Uses Total Earned ÷ Total Possible × 100, the standard method used by most US schools and colleges. See testing and grading standards for more context.
